The course should take about 2 hours to complete, and it includes a lot of useful information like:
- Tips on conducting pre-interviews and interviews with audio in mind
- How to select background (ambient) and relevant (natural) sound to record and mix into our final piece
- What kind of equipment you might need (with brief descriptions of minidisc, DAT, and flash recorders, Omni-directional, cardiod, super-cardiod, lavalier, and wireless mics)
When people used to ask me for tips on breaking into radio, I used to tell them to pick up a copy of Radio:An Illustrated Guide for $5 from the This American Life store. I still think that comic book offers a great overview, but it's a bit dated. From now on, I'll be sending folks to this News University course (and of course, Transom).
