As of today, I've made more money in 2007 than I made during a year of work at my last full time job. Freelancing has been good to me.
Of course, this isn't an apples to apples comparison. I did a little bit of freelance work on the side at my old job. I got paid vacation and medical insurance at that job. And honestly, I worked fewer hours.
But between blogging, public radio, some commercial audio production and some other odds and ends, I've managed to eke out a decent if not extravagant living, which is pretty exciting. Oh yeah, and the fact that I can get health insurance through my wife's job helps. A lot.
OK, enough personal stuff for now. Stay tuned for more updates on field recorders soon.

Congratulations, Brad. What factors have you found to be the most important to successful freelancing?
Gary
Honestly, I have no idea. Probably the fact that I work too much. :) You have to care about what you do, because there are some days when I wake up and don't really feel like doing any work at all. But if I don't work I don't get paid, and once I get started blogging, or pitching radio stories or doing whatever it is that needs doing that day, I realize that there are far worse ways to make a paycheck.
That, and having a supportive spouse(with health insurance).
