Looking for a digital audio recorder with up to 160GB of storage? The Alesis ProTrack will turn a standard iPod into a high quality digital audio recorder, complete with XLR and 1/4th inch inputs. The ProTrack is due out in Q3 of 2008. No word on pricing yet, but here's a rundown of the specs:
- Built-in stereo condenser mics in an XY pattern
- 2 combo XLR-1/4th inch jacks that function as line or mic inputs
- Provides 48V phantom power
- 1/8th inch stereo output
- 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 22kHz stereo recording
- Universal iPod dock
- LED indicators
- Limiter
- Volume control
- Provides up to 5 hours of recording time with 4 AAA batteries
- Threaded mount for use with a tripod
This isn't the first pro audio recorder we've seen that uses an iPod for storage. Belkin announced its $100 Podcast Studio earlier this year. The Podcast Studio was supposed to be released in June, but it doesn't seem to be available for order yet.

Everything is always iPod, but what about the Creative Zen? Creative pioneered the MP3 player and invented the iPod interface, of which they own the patent.
Creative's ZEN players come with a built-in Microphone for recording. The older players even allowed you to record from FM radio. So, save some money and get a Creative ZEN instead.
Who will support you with a Creative player if they go out of business? Besides, they don't make a Zen player with XLR in. Aside from all that, about a bazillion people own iPods compared to a fraction of that who own Zen players.
I'm searching for a Christmas gift for my husband (at his request), a digital recorder for his 40GB ipod model 1059 which is at least 5 years old. Do you know of one that would work with this old iPod?
